Expect to meet early (5:30 AM Summer, 6:30 AM Winter) for morning charters and 1:00 PM or 2:00 PM for afternoon trips. Arrangements may be made to accommodate events.
Once you book your trip, we have dedicated the day and the vessel to you. For this reason the full charter rate is assessed for cancellations made within 72 hours from the charter date (at 7am.). Cancellations within 72 hours do not allow sufficient time for us to find new friends for the day nor does it allow us to properly plan for maintenance and repairs to the vessel. Your understanding of this cancellation policy is of utmost importance to us as we do not like to receive payment from cancellations as much as we do not like to waste a productive day in our lives.
Weather cancellations are determined exclusively by the Captain. The Island has diverse ecosystems. It is the wettest spot in the world yet it rarely rains on the ocean. The biggest condition affecting the ocean is wind. We are located on the LEEWARD coast and this affords us much better conditions on the water than the windward side. For this reason what you see outside your window or hear from a forecast may often be a poor example of what the local conditions will be. The windward side (East) may show stronger winds and larger active surf. During the winter months large North swells may seem impossible obstacles to a good fishing experience yet, this is not what you will find on the South shore. Our experience and local knowledge is the key to a safe and fun day on the water. WEATHER CANCELLATIONS ARE EXCLUSIVELY THE CAPTAINS CALL.
Mechanical bumps do happen unexpectedly. In the event of a mechanical mishap we may need to cancel your trip. In the event a mechanical issue arises and an alternative vessel is not available we will attempt to reschedule. Should a mechanical issue impact our day and we are unable to reschedule, no payment will be expected and any deposit will be refunded.
It is our intent and greatest pleasure to share a portion of the islands finest and freshest fish with you. At the end of the charter we endeavor to fillet portions of the catch for our guests with the goal of providing for your needs for 3-4 days worth of fresh fish. We do not pack and ship fish to the mainland. We are not intending to cater your wedding party. At times we may not find a fish and we may often have something in the box from the prior day we can cut.
On other occasions we catch very large fish. As a fisherman we are not able to cut portions of fish from a larger fish and market the remainder. Fish must be sold whole. For this reason larger fish will not be cut as they are intended for the local markets with proceeds supporting the crew and the equipment on the vessel. Fish sold locally keep our Island economy going. We don’t have shipping, logging, tech sectors, oil or natural gas but we do have fish and tourism. A tuna will help employ staff (my friends) at a local restaurant for about a week. If you are fishing for “meat” your best bet is the local fish market. It is fresh and you can save yourself the 4, 6 or 8 hours of looking for it in the ocean with no guarantee of finding it.
Please take note of the fish catch policy as your understanding of our intentions and local rules will avert misconceptions, sustain morale and enhance your personal experience in the event of a hard day on the water or the greatest fishing experience you have ever had.
It is our purpose to take you out on this ULTIMATE HAWAIIAN FISHING ADVENTURE and bring you back safely. It is our intent to pursue the catch with determination, conviction and grace. If done well it should feel effortless but rest assured our greatest effort is applied long before you arrive and well after you leave. Maintaining the vessel and gear in proper order as well as effect is time consuming and costly. Please be aware that on any charter gratuity for the crew is not included in the charter rate. Consideration for the crew (20% MINIMUM) should be planned for in addition to the charter rate. If you have no intention of extending a courtesy to the crew for their service and effort on your behalf please consider another activity for your entertainment. The crew wages are derived from gratuity and fish sales.

Mechanical Issues
Mechanical bumps do happen unexpectedly. We have three vessels for a reason. At times a pump or starter may give out on short notice. In the event of a mechanical mishap we may jump to an alternative vessel. This is the benefit of having multiple boats. We have two 31′ Bertram’s and a 32′ Blackfin. All three vessels are similarly outfitted and are very fine fishing machines. At times all are running on the same day. In the event a mechanical issue arises and an alternative vessel is not available we will attempt to reschedule. Should a mechanical issue impact our day and we are unable to reschedule, no payment will be expected and any deposit will be refunded. WEATHER CANCELLATIONS ARE EXCLUSIVELY THE CAPTAIN’S CALL.

If you want to deep-sea fish while staying in Kauai, I recommend Captain J's. Our crew, Captain Jeff and Deckhand Brandon were not only friendly but determined to help us catch a fish on our private charter. We originally asked for the 4-hour tour but ended up getting an extra hour on the house since we weren't getting any bites early on. Finally, we saw tunas jumping out of the water and quickly snagged one on the line. It took 30 minutes to pull up a HUGE 215-pound Yellowfin tuna. When we docked they explained the fish had to be immediately iced to make it to the market, as all fish in Hawaii are owned by the boat, for sale back on the island. Since they couldn't cut us any of that catch, they promised they'd call us and deliver some other fresh fish. The next day, Jeff called and delivered pounds of fresh Mahi Mahi directly to our rental! Definitely take this tour!

Captain J and Davy hooked it up - literally! We had an awesome trip, caught fish and feel like we made a couple of friends along the way. By far the best fishing experience I've ever had. Unless the inside bite is hitting hard don't even bother with the 4 hours, go with the 6 hours and head out to deeper water. So glad we went with Captain J.

We went out with Justin and Rob and had a really enjoyable day, modest haul (two good size dorados), called it a day and were heading back to harbor around 5 p.m. Everybody was mentally done for the day ... but then I heard Justin yell "Marlin! A big one!" Two hours of fighting later, we brought it to the side of the boat, tied it on and slowly chugged to the harbor in the dark. A 12.5ft blue marlin. They called all the shots 100% right and worked super hard, but made sure there was a real role and a lot of hard work for me and kids as well, so everybody legitimately felt it was a team haul. The bill (made by Captain J's friend) is now among the most prized memorabilia in our household. I highly recommend Captain J and his team. You will be in good hands.

Captain J and his other boat captains are the very best! These folks absolutely know their stuff and are extremely customer-oriented. They take the time and patience to make you feel very welcome and want you to return time and again. My friend and I had a fantastic time fishing. We were on the Blackfin sport fisher which is a very well set up boat. I've had numerous other conversations with Captain J for help on buying a sport fisher and he always responds quickly and in detail. Great guy. Great operation.

Captain J and Captain Randy made our trip amazing! The most important thing is to have realistic expectations, you could catch tons of fish or not get a bite.... but I'll assure you this, if the fish are there Captain J is gonna make sure they are on the deck! We caught Mahi Mahi and skipjack and let me tell you, the fights of these fish were crazy!! It was such a high and SOOO MUCH FUN! My husband has not stopped talking about our trip! If you are a beginner like me or have been out on the water a lot like my husband you will HAVE A BLAST! Thanks Captain J and Randy we will never forget our day on the water with y'all and CAN NOT WAIT to go back out next time! They took pictures and videos of us reeling in our fish which was so cool because it's so crazy when it happens you forget to get your phone out!

They were terrific. They got us in to fish in the first hour to hour and a half with Mahi Mahi and concluded with the catch of our lives! Our friend from Idaho hooked a nearly 12' marlin and we all enjoyed working this remarkable fish for several hours until we finally landed her in the boat. Bucket list item checked off with multiple!!!'s. Hats off to Jeff and Randy for an excellent experience on the water. I also wish to say that Captain J is remarkably positive with top-notch customer service. I presume there are other good fishing charters on Kauai, but if you're looking for the best, just call Captain J with Deep Sea Fishing Kauai! Thank you for an excellent trip.

Deep Sea Fishing Kauai is by far the best charter I have ever fished with and I have fished with tons of other charters from Hawaii to Mexico and the west coast of California. I expected the same experience, but these guys are by far the best. They took care of us all week - at every turn, making sure we not only enjoyed the trip and caught fish, but also that we didn't get sunburned and had enough water. Jeff spent a long time explaining his tips and tricks to put fish on the boat and I think even gave away a few of his fishing secrets. We caught a lifetime fish...an Ahi that was over #200. My dad described the day as one of the best in his life...being able to fish with his son and catch like we did. I can not thank these guys enough, we had an amazing trip and consider them all our new friends. I will fish with them every time I am in Kauai.

Great outfit- capable and willing to put you on the fish. Captain J called me back promptly after leaving a message and kept in contact until we met him at the dock. Took our 4 kids ages 9-13 out just before tropical storm Guillermo hit and amidst the rolling waves and seasick kids we managed a 145lb Ahi, 2 skipjack tuna and a nice dorado. The crew was great (thanks Captain Jeff and deckhand Brandon). They not only helped make sure the fish made it into the boat but they also cared for the kids and gave us enough fish for a few meals. Highly recommend the charter service, fish of a lifetime!
